Seychelles, by Jaymes Jorsling, (2023, acrylic on canvas) is a visual contemplation that draws parallels between the lush, unspoiled landscapes of the islands and the internal “landscapes” of Black American girls and women…often overlooked, yet overflowing with depth, beauty, power, and history. As the Seychelles remain unbowed by storms and time, so too do Black women carry the weight of survival with dignity and light.
From the innocence of girlhood to the seasoned wisdom of elders, Seychelles honors the continuum of Black female experience in America…shaped by struggle, joy, creativity, and legacy. It is both a celebration and a prayer: that Black women, like islands, continue to rise, flourish, and be seen in their full brilliance.
This piece is now on display at Women Building Up, an organization that shifts resources to women, girls, and gender expansive people who have been impacted by carceral systems— building leadership, wellbeing, & power. Their 19,000 square foot building in Downtown Brooklyn features a stunning art collection and is an event and collaboration space designed to nurture joy, deepen connections, and strengthen justice movements.
